Wednesday - 22 April 2009 - Glacier Express Circuit
Yesterday's Bernina and Albula--see detailed map above with shows two spiral tunnels ON TOP OF EACH OTHER--was fantastic. Today's Glacier Express was every better. (I'm afraid of tomorrow's trip. Maybe it will involve chocolate and, uh, who knows what.) We started from Chur with a full course lunch in a wrap around windowed dining car through the spine of The Alps and then made a complete circuit down Gothard Pass around Lake Luzerne and then along Lake Zurich and the Rhine Valley back to Chur. After a nice "some sort of lake fish" prepared lactose free for me, I think this was an extraordinary day. Oh, did I mention the avalanche right ahead of the train that looked like we would be on the top of Gothard Pass (or backing up) for an extended period? (Look behind the sign in the pictures above.) I was very happy to see that those industrious Swiss had built an avalanche gallery over just that very slide path so that we were not even delayed a minute. Of course, Swiss trains are never delayed by anything for even a minute. And there was the Roman road that is still partially in use after 2,000+ years and those alpine valleys full of gigantic dandy lions.
